Every September, middle school students across Haywood County pull on chest waders and immerse themselves not only into the waters of the Pigeon River, but into a dynamic, hands-on educational experience unrivaled in Western North Carolina.
Professionals from various scientific disciplines guide students through four hands-on stations, each of which were designed to align perfectly with the 8th grade science curriculum they learn in the classroom. This past year, Canton Middle School students experienced additional excitement as their activities during Kids in the Creek were featured in a story that aired on WLOS News.
Organized and operated by the non-profit Haywood Waterways Association, Kids in the Creek will celebrate its 20th year next September. Haywood Waterways is dependent upon various forms of fundraising in order to pay for this incredible opportunity for Canton Middle School students. Their primary fundraiser is coldly effective – a daring pledge drive featuring a chilly, costumed dive into wintry Lake Junaluska!
This year, 8th grade science teacher Mr. Faust will once again be braving the icy waters and needs the support of Canton Middle School parents to match or exceed last year’s fundraising effort, which earned the 3rd place Silver Plunger among Haywood County School participants.
There are two donation options available – you can either send money to school with your child to put into donation jars in the cafeteria, or you can donate using the link below:
