Students from Canton Middle competed on March 21st in the Battle of the Books Regional contest. The competition took place in Sylva and was an all day battle between eight different counties. In the final round, Canton Middle tied with Henderson County with a total of 109 points. In the runoff between the two, Canton came in second place. The winning team will go on to Raleigh in May to compete against all the regional winners. Although Canton didn’t make it to Raleigh, they were very excited to have performed so well. The importance of this endeavor was that they were exposed to award winning literature and improved their reading skills dramatically by not only reading what was assigned by their teachers but the additional 27 books for this group which was a total of 8,204 pages and 7,725,387 words. These students also came to recognize certain genres of books and authors which they truly loved and will continue to read.
